Atawhai Charitable Trust

The Atawhai Charitable Trust works with rangatahi (youth) and wāhine (women) coming out of prison. They operate from a whanau perspective so demographic groups tend to blend in terms of age. Their mission is Tiaki Taiohi (to look after, guard and protect youth) in Tairawhiti, Gisborne.

The funding directly impacted twelve year 9 Māori girls between 13 to 14 years old; 40 Māori and pakeha transgender and gender-fluid teens in the community group between 14-18 years old; and two Māori wāhine between 30 to 50 years old, who has just come out of prison and whom the Atawhai trust are supporting. Atawhai does work with boys also but the funding specifically helped those who are transgender, gender fluid and wāhine.
