Camp Quality New Zealand

Camp Quality New Zealand delivers transformative summer camp experiences for children and young people living with cancer. These camps provide a safe, joyful space where tamariki can reconnect with their childhood, build friendships, and recharge emotionally. Whether undergoing active treatment, in remission, or managing long-term effects, each child is supported with compassion and care. The Sutherland Self Help Trust supported these experiences with a grant in 2024 as part of the funding initiative for Health and Education projects for Children Under 12.

Community Profile

Camp Quality serves a diverse group of children:
– Those undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery
– Those on maintenance treatment
– Those in remission, coping with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges

The camp offers a community of shared experiences and aroha, helping children feel seen, supported, and uplifted.

Camp programmes are an opportunity for them to be kids once again, catch up on their missed childhood, feel part of a community of shared experiences and aroha, and recharge their emotional batteries for the challenges that lie ahead.

Story Highlight: Rupert’s Journey

Rupert, diagnosed with leukaemia at age three, spent two years in and out of hospital. His mum discovered Camp Quality through an oncology nurse at Starship Hospital.

Now eight, Rupert has attended two camps and found joy, confidence, and companionship—especially through his bond with Harris, his camp companion.

“Seeing him come back with all the stories from camp makes me so happy as a mum. I honestly wouldn’t send Rupert anywhere else.”

“I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the trustees for their support of Camp Quality and the tamariki and rangatahi we take to camp. It is hugely appreciated.” — Dave Bellamy, Camp Quality NZ
